How does the oil filter work?
I believe all car owners know that cars (except trams) need to use oil filters, but do you know how oil filters work?
The working principle of the oil filter element is not complex. During the operation of the engine, with the operation of the oil pump, the oil with impurities continuously enters the oil filter from the oil inlet on the oil filter base plate assembly and then passes through the check valve to the outside of the filter paper for filtration.
Under the action of pressure, the oil continuously passes through the filter paper and enters the central pipe, while the impurities in the oil remain on the filter paper.
The oil entering the central pipe enters the engine lubrication system from the oil outlet in the middle of the oil filter base plate to participate in lubrication.
There are two key components: bypass valve and check valve.
Normally, the bypass valve is closed, but in special cases, the bypass valve will be opened to ensure the normal supply of oil:
- When the filter exceeds the replacement cycle and the filter element is seriously blocked.
- When the oil is very viscous (cold start, low temperature outside).
Although the oil flowing at this time is unfiltered, it is much lighter than the damage caused by no oil to lubricate the engine.
When the vehicle stops running, the oil inlet check valve is closed to ensure that the oil in the oil filter and subsequent lubrication system is not drained, and ensure that the required oil pressure is established as soon as possible when the engine is started again to avoid dry friction.
Tips for selecting a high-quality oil filter
Tip 1: look at the appearance details
The oil filter produced by well-known brands not only has good materials and workmanship but also will not be careless in the treatment of appearance details. Only well-known brands are willing to invest in appearance details and do their best. Fake goods or refurbished goods have no such ability at all, and the process can be saved.
Tip 2: look at the texture of the rubber ring
The sealing rubber ring at the inlet and outlet of the engine oil filter is also one of the references to judge the quality of the engine oil filter. We can take off the rubber ring and knead it with our hands to feel the texture of the rubber ring.
For a good oil filter, the rubber ring material will be very thick, and it will feel soft when pinched by hand, to ensure the tightness around the oil inlet and outlet; The cheap rubber ring has a hard texture and insufficient elasticity.
Tip 3: see if there is a check valve
Whether there is a check valve is also an important basis for judging the quality level of an oil filter. We can use the gadgets around us to identify whether the oil filter has a check valve structure.
The check valve of the oil filter is a rubber cup, a very simple component, but its function is quite important - it can block the oil return to ensure that the oil pressure can be formed in the lubrication system as soon as possible during the cold start of the engine, to ensure the oil supply and avoid dry friction.
Tip 4: look at the fixation of the filter element
For a good engine oil filter, the filter element will be firmly fixed inside the engine filter and will not shift when bearing the engine oil pressure and vehicle bumps, to ensure that the engine oil passes through the filter paper to complete the filtration. Therefore, the fixation degree of the filter element can also judge the quality of a mechanical filter.
Tip 5: see if there is a bypass valve
Under normal conditions, the bypass valve is closed, and all oil needs to pass through the filter paper to be fully filtered. However, the bypass valve will be opened in the following two cases to prevent dry friction of the engine: one is when the oil filter element is seriously blocked, and the other is when the oil is very viscous (cold start at low temperature).
The opening pressure of the bypass valve of some inferior oil filters is too small, resulting in the bypass valve being open for a long time, and the unfiltered oil will directly enter the engine lubrication system.
