There are three types of fuel filters: diesel filters, gasoline filters and natural gas filters. Its function is to filter out harmful particles and water in the fuel gas system of the engine to protect the oil pump nozzle, cylinder liner, piston ring, etc., reduce wear and avoid blockage.

Diesel filter

The structure of the diesel filter is roughly the same as that of the oil filter, and there are two types: replaceable and spin-on. However, its working pressure and oil temperature resistance requirements are much lower than those of oil filters, while its filtration efficiency requirements are much higher than those of oil filters. The filter element of diesel filter mostly uses filter paper, and some also use felt or polymer material.

Diesel filters can be divided into diesel water separators and diesel fine filters. The important function of the oil-water separator is to separate the water in the diesel oil. The presence of water is extremely harmful to the diesel engine fuel supply system, and corrosion, wear, and jamming will even worsen the combustion process of diesel. Due to the high sulfur content in Chinese diesel, when combustion occurs, it will even react with water to form sulfuric acid that corrodes engine components. The traditional way of water removal is mainly sedimentation, through the funnel structure. Engines with emissions above the National III level have higher requirements for water separation, and high requirements require the use of high-performance filter media.

The diesel fine filter is used to filter the fine particles in the diesel oil. The diesel engine with emissions above the national three is mainly aimed at the filtration efficiency of 3-5 micron particles.

Petrol filter

Gasoline filters are divided into carburetor type and EFI type. For gasoline engines using carburetors, the gasoline filter is located on the inlet side of the fuel pump, and the working pressure is low. Generally, nylon shells are used. The gasoline filter is located on the outlet side of the fuel transfer pump and has a high working pressure, usually with a metal casing. The filter element of the gasoline filter mostly uses filter paper, and some also use nylon cloth and polymer materials.

Because the combustion method of the gasoline engine is different from that of the diesel engine, the overall requirements are not as harsh as the diesel filter, so the price is cheap.

Problems that can occur when the fuel filter is replaced irregularly

The function of the fuel filter is to filter the impurities in the fuel, but after a long time of use, the inside of the fuel filter may be blocked by impurities, which will affect the fuel supply, resulting in reduced fuel supply and difficulty in starting the engine. In addition, prolonged blockage of the fuel filter can lead to premature failure of the gasoline pump.

Consequences of using substandard and inferior fuel filters

Inferior fuel filters are made of poor materials, and their filtering effect is also very poor. Using the internal filter element for a long time may cause the oil circuit to be blocked, resulting in insufficient fuel pressure and the vehicle cannot be started. At the same time, it will also cause abnormal pressure in the fuel system, which directly leads to insufficient engine power or insufficient combustion, and damages valuable components such as three-way catalytic converters and oxygen sensors.
